A medical billing and coding certification can be a great way to improve your career prospects as well as allow you to gain additional training in becoming a medical biller and coder.  Many employers may even require this certification as a job requirement.  Here, we take a closer look at the whole certification process.

People can get the training to prepare for a medical billing and coding certification by taking classes at medical billing school.  These training can be taken online or on-site.  This training if completed by an approved school from the AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association), will be setup to prepare you to take the certified medical billing specialist exam or CMBS exam.  This is offered by the Medical Association of Billers or MAB and the CMBS exam is taken to become a Certified Medical Billing Specialist.

This certification costs roughly $200 and will give people the ability to potentially earn more pay.  It also provides access to the AHIMA’s job database.  This database has a list of employers and potential job offerings that those who are certified can apply for.

Now, in order to get this certification, people will need to pass the CMBS exam.  This exam consists of 100 questions that will cover topics including medical terminology, insurance, coding, fraud, and more.  There are also additional certifications one can choose to do that are more specialized as you can find certifications focused on hospital billing and coding and those focused on a chiropractors businesses.  These additional certifications may be worthwhile depending on what career path you are trying to create.
